Apparently, people eat these things.

Though I’ve never seen one consumed, having been raised Catholic, I understand pious folk have consumed them as a measure of atonement for the suffering of Jesus on the cross. The fish is called hoki (or blue grenadier), and in its heyday, McDonald’s alone consumed 15 million pounds of the hideous, ugly creatures. Hoki are deep water specimens, and though New Zealand hasn’t officially declared the species endangered, New Zealand has cut the allowable catch number by almost two-thirds since 2001.

Like the popular orange roughy before it, hoki levels are dropping to the point where it’s clear current levels of consumption are not sustainable. McDonald’s has admitted that their hoki consumption has dropped to about 11 million pounds a year, indicating the Filet O’Fish also contains “other whitefish.” As of now, allowable catch levels are at 100,000 tons a year versus 275,000 tons less than a decade ago.
