The Closer: Real estate news, gossip and plenty of eye candy

  • Plenty of eye candy for design lovers last week at the opening of the Designer Visions Cinema Style 2009 show house presented by Hearst Magazines. Taking place at SoHo Mews, a two-building new condo with a lobby off West Broadway and townhouses off Wooster St., the event drew actress Sela Ward, Fine Living Network’s Lloyd Boston, fashion’s Richie Rich and branding consultant Lisa Raden.
The stars of the show, though, were the designers and the magazines whose personalities each captured. Richard Mishaan’s Town & Country house was designed with the movie “Dinner at Eight” in mind. His library has white-spotted beige carpeting with lamps resembling bronze buildings. John Saladino plays with scale and geometry in Veranda’s “Girl With a Pearl Earring” house. A wooden column over a glass top forms a coffee table.

The grandest statement, though, came from Thom Filicia. The former “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” star can say farewell to any connection to “reality television designer” after his execution of the House Beautiful “Big Chill” space. This guy has come into his own.

Every room popped. Whether it’s light branches on wallpaper in the powder room, different blue hues in the bedroom, or a circular sculpture fronting a Roberto Dutesco photograph of wild horses in the dining room, Filicia’s dark colors at once buck and embrace tradition with modern materials. (He uses thick rope as a stairway rail and hand-woven rug of his own design.)

The house is open to consumers by calling (212) 226-0020. The Web site (designer visionsonline.com) includes video interviews and 360 tours.

“We know it’s frustrating for consumers to not see the house,” says Jeanne Noonan, executive director, Hearst Integrated Media. “But it’s important for design to be accessible. This Web site offers so much usable material—expert tips, product information, top picks, hints.”

  • As neighborhoods get reshaped to make bike lanes and the city keeps pressing to get people out of cars, some New Yorkers have found ways to stay stylish while cycling. “Bike Style, a Bicycle Fashion Show” takes place tomorrow from 9 p.m. to midnight at Hudson Urban Bicycles, a bike store at 71 Morton St. in the West Village. The show starts at 10 p.m. with live music, a DJ and cash bar going till midnight. Check out fashion models wearing apparel by Reiss and Lela Rose riding bikes from Batavus, Abici and Biria. According to owner George Bliss, who brought pedicabs to New York City, this could be the first of its kind in this city. Call (212) 965-9334 for more information. The store may have to move soon because of rising rents.

  • Two bang-for-the-buck sales this weekend for design-conscious price savers. First, French furniture icon Ligne Roset offers 15% to 60% off floor models and discontinued furnishings. The store is located at 250 Park Ave., with the sale on Saturday and Sunday. Kartell, the Italian furnishings retailer with a strong lighting line, will start its sale tomorrow, offering up to 15% off lighting items.

They’re located at 39 Greene St. The sale will last through Nov. 15. Inventory won’t. Prices range from $106 for a wall lamp that comes in pastel hues to $1,075  for a minimalist extra-large hanging lamp.
