House Democrats Deny Republican Effort to Oust Embattled Rep. Charles Rangel

House Democrats today beat back a Republican gambit to oust Democrat U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel from his position as the chair of the House Ways and Means Committee due to his tax issues, deferring instead to an ongoing investigation on the matter.

In a 246-153 vote, the Democrats blocked a resolution authored by Rep. John Carter (R-Texas) to remove him from the head of the tax-writing committee because Rangel's failure to pay taxes on some rental income and other irregularities has reflected poorly upon the entire House. The vote called for sending the matter to the ethics committee.

In addition to his failure to pay taxes on rental income from a vacation property in the Dominican Republic, Rangel neglected to disclose assets worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

After the vote, Rangel, who voted along with the rest of the Democrats to turn it over to the ethics committee, told the New York Times: "I have been waiting patiently for the ethics committee to make a judgment. That is where it belongs. It does not belong on the floor."

Republicans said they only wanted Rangel to step aside for the duration of the investigation.
