Models, Clouds, and Hockey Goals: Buzz Week in Review

At the risk of sounding like the tagline to "Transformers," is anything what it seems? With Photoshop and similar software, pictures and videos can be airbrushed or expanded and the average schmo can never tell the difference. This past week, three stories' footage looked just too bizarre or fantastic to be real. Amazingly, only one of 'em was doctored.
The model that wasn't there
By now, you're probably aware of the saga of Filippa Hamilton. She's the former model for Ralph Lauren whose image was airbrushed for an advertisement, turning a healthy-looking woman into an emaciated bobblehead. This past week, the model found herself back in the spotlight after revealing that her contract with Ralph Lauren wasn't renewed because she was thought to be—get this—too heavy. The news inspired tremendous interest in the model. Web searches on "filippa hamilton photos," "ralph lauren model fired," and "filippa hamilton airbrush" all soared on the news. For its part, Ralph Lauren contends the model was let go due to a "contract dispute" and not because of her weight.
One cool cloud
Clouds have a tendency to form odd shapes. Heck, we once saw one that looked just like Roger Ebert. But even that paled in comparison to the UFO-shaped cloud that was recently spotted over Moscow. Though the photos and video of the cloud looked doctored, we're here to assure you that the hovering mass was the real deal. UFO experts called the cloud "a true mystery," but weather experts had a rather ordinary, if accurate, explanation. An article from the Daily Mail explained that the "luminous ring-shaped cloud" was just an optical effect. Searches on "halo cloud" and "moscow cloud" both soared throughout the week, due in large to the fact that the cloud looked eerily like the alien spaceship from "Independence Day."
A sticky hockey puck
Oliver Wahlstrom is a 9-year-old kid who loves to play hockey, and with good reason—he's really, really good at it. This past week, a video clip of young Oliver became a Web sensation. In the clip, Wahlstrom skates toward the goal, spins around while picking up the puck on the blade of his stick, and then rockets the puck into the net. The clip caused a slew of searches on "9 year old's goal" and "oliver wahlstrom." In an interview with CBS, Oliver revealed that he had practiced the shot extensively before getting his chance to use it in the one-on-one exhibition. No Photoshop necessary.
