No Mercy is No More

As you all know, No Mercy this year was replaced with "Hell in a Cell" and Cyber Sunday is now "Bragging Rights." I have already given my two cents about the PPV, (read my previous article), and now I want to look back at what the PPV brought over the past 10 years, and what we'll be missing. In October 1999, No Mercy was the name of a PPV that took place in Cleveland, Ohio. This show was quite historic. First off, it featured a match between Ivory and the Fabulous Moolah for the Women's Championship. Moolah won the match, becoming the oldest champion in professional wrestling history.
It also featured the infamous "Good Houskeeping Match" between Double J and Chyna for the Intercontinental Championship. After hitting Jarrett over the head with his guitar, Chyna became the first (and so far only) woman ever to hold the IC Title.
No Mercy 1999 also saw the birth of four new superstars. In the Terri Invitational Tournamnet, the Hardy Boyz and Edge and Christian elevated their status in the WWE by doing things with Tables, Ladders, and Chairs that hadn't been seen before by tag teams or singles competitors. Although the Hardys won the match, all four of those men reached a new status in the eyes of their peers, and overshadowed the rest of the PPV.
No Mercy 2000, which eminated from the Albany, NY, saw the first of many World title wins for Kurt Angle. Angle defeated The Rock in No DQ match.
No Mercy 2001 in St. Louis, MO. saw the first world title win for Chris Jericho. Jericho defeated The Rock for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. The PPV also featured Edge and Christian fighting each other for the IC title in a ladder match. Ironically, two years after they competed in an amazing ladder match together as a tag team.
No Mercy 2002 featured Brock Lesnar (c) defeating the Undertaker in a Hell in a Cell match for the WWE title. On the Raw spectrum, HHH defeated IC champion Kane to unify his title with the World Title. The show also featured Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit defeating Edge and Rey Mysterio to become the first ever WWE Tag Team Champions (the WWE tag belts were exclusive to the SmackDown! brand).
No Mercy 2003 was the first No Mercy to feature just SmackDown! superstars. The PPV featured the Undertaker v. Brock Lesnar (c) for the WWE title in a Biker Chain on a Pole match. The show also featured the classic "I Quit" match between Stephanie Mcmahon and her father in which Stephanie lost the match and had to reisgn as SmackDown! General Manager. Another notable match from the show is the US title match between Eddie Guerrero (c) and the Big Show. Big Show came out the victor in the end, but Eddie really seemed to hold his own throughout the match.
No Mercy 2004 featured the Last Ride match between Undertaker and JBL, which JBL often contributed to the short length of his career when doing SmackDown! commentary. The match was for the WWE title, and saw JBL (c) coming out of it as the victor with the help of Heidenreich. Heidenreich crashed a car into the hearse the Undertaker was in, causing a large explosion.
No Mercy 2005 will be remembered as the last PPV to feature the late Eddie Guerrero. He faced his good friend and World Champion Batista for the title. Eddie did not come out on top, but the match was extremely close and exciting. The show also featured the PPV debut of Mr Kennedy... Kennedy who defeated Hardcore Holly. The show also had the Ortons (Randy and Bob) v. the Undertaker in a casket match. The Ortons managed to defeat the Deadman at his own game. After the match, they locked the casket and set it on fire.
No Mercy 2006 featured a four-way match between Booker T (c), Finlay, Batista, and Bobby Lashley for the World title. Booker T won the match and retained his title after pinning Finlay. The PPV also featured the in-ring debut of MVP. He faced a jobber and came out the victor.
No Mercy 2007 featured the stars of RAW, SmackDown! and ECW. Since John Cena had injured his arm on RAW, he had to relinquish the WWE title. Mr. McMahon awarded the title to Randy Orton. However, Triple-H came out and challenged Orton to a match for the title. Orton accepted and lost the match.
HHH had a previously booked match against Umaga and McMahon made it for the WWE title. HHH came out the victor in that match. However, Randy Orton envoked his rematch clause that same night and he and HHH faced each other once again for the WWE title. This time the match was a Last Man Standing match, and Randy Orton came out of the match WWE champion once again. On the SmackDown! side, Batista faced The Great Khali in a Pujabi Prison match for the World title. Batista climbed out of both structures first to retain his title.
No Mercy 2008 featured a Ladder match for the World title between Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho (c). Jericho came out on top in the match to retain the title. Some consider this to be the best match of their 2008 feud. On the SmackDown! side, HHH succesfully defended his WWE title against Jeff Hardy.
As you can see, a lot has happened at No Mercy over the years. Hopefully, the WWE's choice to replace with it with Hell in a Cell was a wise one, and they don't live to regret it.
