Success in the stars for Third Eye Blind

After a six-year wait, ’90s pop/rock group Third Eye Blind is back on the map with their new CD “Ursa Major.” You may have heard of Third Eye Blind from their Billboard topping hit “Semi-Charmed Life” in 1997. They also released other popular songs like “Jumper,” “How’s It Going to Be” and “Never Let You Go.”

Whether you were a growing young kid, a rebellious teenager, or a parent bringing their kids home from soccer practice, the music of Third Eye Blind was sure to be in your ears. Now, they are back once again with “Ursa Major.”
With this album, Third Eye Blind brings back all their signature trademarks as musicians. There are songs such as “Can You Take Me” and “Don’t Believe A Word,” which have that ’90s pop/rock sound to them which makes you become nostalgic for the times before the outbreak of country, rap, and The Jonas Brothers.

The catchy beats and easy to relate to lyrics about breaking away and rebellion make you want to get up, dance and sing along. It is easy to see why these songs are the first ones on the album.

Third Eye Blind also return with their sexually-charged and controversial lyrics most apparent in songs such as “Why Can’t You Be” and “About To Break.” Behind the talk of lesbians and sexual acts, there are actual messages hidden within these songs.

The hidden messages tackle problems in our society today, such as accepting minority groups and serious relationships. The controversial lyrics just add a little flavor Third Eye Blind is known for, and that is what makes them unique.
But the most prominent feature of this new CD is Third Eye Blind’s ability to capture emotional situations in their songs and express them through touching lyrics. This can be seen in songs like “Bonfire,” “Summer Town” and “Sharp Knife.” The way they sing about the world changing, friends leaving to go their separate ways, and ending relationships could bring even the most heartless of people to think about things in perspective.

This is my favorite feature of Third Eye Blind. They present problems a high school student might have from a first person perspective, yet they are old enough to be my father. They understand the struggle to find yourself, the trouble of losing people you love, and the changes young adults go through. With this understanding, they write beautiful songs telling how these situations could be handled, maybe even from personal experience.

“Ursa Major” feels like a breath of fresh air in the world of popular music these days. They bring back the light rock of years past and present it in a way that is appealing to the present musical society.

No matter what your musical taste, Third Eye Blind will appeal to you. I suggest that you give them a listen, and see for yourself how much you enjoy their light guitar rifts, soothing piano keys, and soft, meaningful vocals.
Heck, wouldn’t you rather find a new band to listen to, rather than listening to the Taylor Swift or Lil’ Wayne CD that plays 20 times a day in your car? Go ahead and give “Ursa Major” a listen, even if it means listening to the iTunes previews. I am willing to bet after those 30 seconds, you will click “Buy Album” and enjoy the greatest soft rock/pop album of 2009.
