Best friends fell sick, with 1 tragic outcome

Two weeks before Michelle Fahle died, she and her best friend hugged a girl who later tested positive for the H1N1 swine flu virus, according to the best friend, Alexa Hansen.
Later, Fahle and Hansen, both freshmen, became ill themselves.
The two came down with high temperatures Sunday morning and Hansen said she hasn't gone to school since Monday. At one point the two friends were watching TV cartoons from their homes and texting one another about how miserable they felt.
Wenna Beeman, Hansen's mother, said: "Alexa came home and said this girl had tested positive for the swine flu. I freaked out. I didn't hear anything from the school, so I thought it must be fine. I'm kind of confused. But something wasn't done more aggressively."
Hansen said today that the first link in the chain of events that led to Fahle's death came when Hansen and Fahle ran up to a mutual friend in the hallway after school ended and hugged her two weeks ago.
"We hug everyone. She wasn't feeling great so we hugged her," Hansen said.
A few days later, Fahle came by Hansen's locker and said she wasn't feeling well. Hansen said she touched her friend's forehead and noticed it was hot.
The two friends came down with fevers. In Hansen's case, according to Beeman, her temperature was 102.7 degrees and she could barely stand up.
Beeman took her daughter to a convenient care facility in Naperville, where medical personnel did a swab test for the flu. The test came back positive for seasonal flu, Beeman said.
Shortly after visiting the facility, Hansen had a horrible cough and diarrhea. On Thursday, Beeman said, the school nurse called and said Fahle had died. The nurse "highly recommended" that Beeman take Alexa to a doctor, Beeman said. She said that doctor believed her daughter had swine flu, based on her symptoms.
