Expert needs volunteers to track down Gresford's oldest trees

A TREE expert who recently appeared on television is looking for volunteers to help him track down Gresford’s oldest and grandest trees.
Rob McBride, of the Woodland Trust, was seen on the BBC’s Countryfile programme last month abseiling down the side of the Trevor Rocks near Llangollen to measure an ancient yew.
Now Rob is inviting people to join him in less challenging conditions for an ancient tree hunt at All Saints churchyard in Gresford.
Volunteers will get the chance to help measure and survey the yew trees on the site, including the magnificent ancient Gresford Old Lady, which is thought to be over 1,500-years-old.
Rob will also give an illustrated presentation about ancient trees in some of the other rural churchyards in Wrexham during the workshop.
Sue Kelly, a volunteer co-ordinator for the Sacred Space project, which is overseeing the event, said: “The Gresford Yews have attracted attention over the last 200 years and articles about them have appeared in various publications.
“The Old Lady has been measured several times since 1808. The last record dates back to 1984, so as a quarter of a century has elapsed since then, it seems an ideal time to update the records of the yew trees in the churchyard.“
The free event takes place on Friday, October 30, from 10am to 3pm. Everyone is welcome to attend, but advance booking is required.
