UW-Platteville Homecoming 2009: Sig Ep wins overall; Dobson gets Spirit Award

This year’s Homecoming had student groups from around campus participating in events following the theme “Pioneers Come on Down.” Events included: the Gold Bar Relay, Tug-of-War, the Homecoming Parade, Yell at the Volleyball Coronation, Tricycle Races and the Variety Show.
Greek Life, 91 FM, Fusion X, UW-Platteville Veterans Club, Rangerettes and residence halls were among the groups represented at the Variety Show. Participants were judged on originality (40 percent), audience reaction (25 percent), correlation to theme (25 percent) and time (10 percent), as listed on the UW-P Web site. The Variety Show performance was moved from the Center for the Arts to Velzy Commons in Ullsvik Hall in order to accomodate a larger audience. The emcees for the show were the members of the Homecoming Court.
The winners of the Variety Show were Gamma Phi Beta and Sigma Phi Epsilon for the Greek houses, for residence halls Porter Hall, for campus organizations 91 FM and for open group Lifeline.
The Gold Bar Relay was on Oct. 7 at Memorial Park. The racers were split up into men’s, women’s and co-ed teams. The winner for the women’s race was Zeta Beta Chi, the winner for the men’s race was the open group The Mechanicals and the winner for the co-ed team was the Art Club.
On Oct. 8, the Tug-of-War competition took place at Memorial Park. The contest started with 14 co-ed teams, seven men’s teams and five women’s teams. Each team had eight members. Spectators and participants both agreed that this event was intensely competitive and rewarding.
“It was a lot harder than I thought it would be, once they blew the whistle and the pulling started it was like trying to move a brick wall, but once your team started to make progress we all got very excited hearing the cheers from the spectators and it seemed like we could pull anything, if people could stay on their feet,” participant of Dobson Hall and business administration major, Nick Hougas, said.
“Everyone was yelling, supporting [with encouraging cheers of] ‘pull’ or the random ‘you can do it’, it was a very exhilarating atmosphere,” chemistry major, Brittany Raehsler, said.
“I was so determined, I wanted to win so bad, with the screaming fans for and against us the moment kept building, I was determined to win! Fifth place is better than last year and next year we will come out even stronger,” engineering major, Brianna Luebke, said.
