Oct. 16--More than 10,000 Allegheny Power customers in Centre County -- about 18 percent of the county homes and businesses served by the company -- are without power this morning.
It's the result of 145 outages caused by heavy snow bringing down trees, tree limbs and power lines.
The storm brings the earliest snowfall ever seen in Centre County. The National Weather Service this morning was reporting observations of between 3.5 and 5 inches of snow at different points in the county.
State College Area School district is among those affected by power outages, and canceled classes today as a result. While Penns Valley appears to be operating normally, Bald Eagle and Bellefonte school districts had declared a two-hour delay.
Penn State University issued a news release stating that it was operating on a normal schedule, but warning pedestrians and motorists of hazardous conditions, including downed power lines and fallen tree limbs.
Curtin Road near the intersection of Porter Road is closed to traffic, and university police and Office of Physical Plant employees were marking, with yellow tape, areas that pedestrians should avoid.
Pugh Street Mall, Allen Street Mall, Schreyer Lane, Hastings Road near Graduate Circle and College Avenue near Pugh Street are some areas identified by the university as those that could have falling or damaged branches.
Penn State's homecoming parade is scheduled to go off as planned this evening, but the pep rally, including the king and queen coronation, has been moved inside to HUB-Robeson Center's Alumni Hall. Paternoville was dismantled because of falling temperatures.
Tree limbs and trees bowing and snapping under the weight of several inches of heavy, moisture-laden snow is a common sight throughout the county this morning. An advisory from the National Weather Service called the storm an "historic and extremely damaging event."
