James Bond fans drawn to Big E

WEST SPRINGFIELD - It's the kind of stunt that wouldn't happen today.
In "The Man with the Golden Gun," James Bond, played by Roger Moore, jumps a red 1974 AMC Hornet X hatchback over water, spinning 360 degrees in the air, landing perfectly on the other side.
The famous car - and a replay of the legendary "astro spiral" jump over a broken bridge - can be seen in the Young Building at the Eastern States Exposition (also known as the Big E). The exhibit attracted Bond fans, the curious and a self-described "motorhead" on Saturday.

"Hey watch this, here comes the stunt!" Ronald R. Lenois Jr., of Greenfield, said to his twin 6-year-old sons, Daniel and Derek.
Lenois called himself a "big James Bond fan." His wife, Edie, revealed that her husband has the entire Bond collection. Lenois said he was excited about the exhibit, which, in addition the car, features stills from the movie, newspaper articles about the jump and other memorabilia.
"I knew exactly when the scene was coming. They did it in one take," Lenois said.
Another observer, Alwin P. Woods, of Fitchburg, the "motorhead," said he was impressed to see the car.
Bond fans Daniel A. Miller, of Great Barrington, and Timothy D. Farnum, of New York and Florida, intently watched the video of the chase scene and a discussion of the jump by creator Jay Milligan. Miller said finding the exhibit was an unexpected surprise.
"For its time when they did this, it was spectacular, compared to today when everything is done with special effects," Miller said.
"This man was putting his life on the line," Farnum said about the stuntman.
