Jellyfish kills minor in Western Visayas

A weekend bath in a river proved fatal to one of six youths who accidentally came in contact with a jellyfish in Negros Occidental, a radio report said Monday.

Radio dzXL reported the six minors were bathing in a river at Sitio Luyang in Giljungan village in Cauayan town at noon Saturday when the incident occurred.

Village chief Lito Gilbosa said the six complained of burning sensation on the skin after getting in contact with the "salabay," a toxic type of jellyfish.

The six were rushed to a nearby hospital but one of them died. The fatality was not immediately identified.

Meanwhile, in a science article posted on an Australian Web site www.abc.net.au, researcher Lisa-ann Gershwin of the James Cook University wrote about some effects of a sting of a type of jellyfish her team was studying.

The article said that a sting of a Irukandji jellyfish, found in the northern coast of Australia, could cause, within an hour, severe lower back pain, shooting pains all over the body, cramping, nausea, vomiting, profuse sweating and coughing. - GMANews.TV
